Cantilever Parasols

banner image for cantilever parasols category

Cantilever parasols provide flexible shade for garden seating, dining sets and lounge areas without placing a pole in the middle of the space. Before choosing one, check the canopy size, base requirements and rotation options, as these details affect how much shade you get and how easy the parasol is to use every day.

How to choose the right size

The canopy should cover the area you use most often, not just the table or sofa itself. For a small bistro set or two loungers, a compact square or round canopy may be enough. For a larger outdoor dining table or corner sofa, choose a wider canopy that gives shade across the seating area when the sun moves.

How much space do you need?

A cantilever parasol needs more floor space than a central pole parasol because the base sits to one side. Leave enough room for the base, the rotating arm and safe movement around the furniture. Check the full open height and width before buying, especially if the parasol will stand close to a wall, balcony rail, pergola or overhanging tree.

Base, stability and daily use

The base is one of the most important parts of an offset parasol. A larger canopy needs a heavier, more stable base to prevent tipping. Some models use cross bases with weight plates, while others require a dedicated weighted base. Always check whether the base is included and whether extra weight is needed.

  • Choose a heavy base for exposed patios or open garden areas.
  • Close the parasol in strong wind, even if the frame is sturdy.
  • Use a protective cover when the parasol is not in use.
  • Check that the crank, tilt and rotation mechanisms are easy to reach.

Which materials work best outdoors?

Aluminium frames are popular because they are light, resistant to rust and easy to move compared with steel. Powder-coated metal adds extra protection against daily outdoor use. For the canopy, polyester is common because it is practical, relatively easy to clean and suitable for regular garden use.

Canopy care and weather protection

A cantilever garden parasol is designed for shade, not as a permanent weather shelter. Let the canopy dry before folding it away, brush off loose dirt and clean marks with mild soapy water. During heavy rain, wind or the colder months, store the parasol indoors or keep it covered in a sheltered place.

What to check before buying

Think about where the shade should fall during the time of day you use the garden most. A rotating or tilting cantilever parasol is useful if you need to adjust the shade without moving the whole base. Also check the opening mechanism, canopy shape, UV protection, included accessories and whether the parasol can be secured properly on your surface.

To narrow down your choice, measure your seating or dining area first, then compare canopy size, base weight and adjustment options. The best option is the one that gives enough shade, stands securely and can be handled comfortably by the people using it.
