Get to Know our Handmade Cushions

scattered cushions

Scatter cushions are, no doubt, the best pieces to totally transform the look of a room in no time. Cushions that are subtle in colour will introduce a homely feel, while those bold in pattern will become statement pieces. For comfortable napping or sprucing up the sofa, throw pillows are the essentials in any home.

Block printing

Block print is a technique which allows creating cushions that exude a unique character and individual beauty. The origin of the printing process goes far back in time, and traces of this ancient craft can be found in old Asian art pieces. With a history like that, no wonder, block-printed cushions are much sought after.

But let’s go back to the process itself. Manufacturing block-print textiles is a complicated process that begins with thoroughly soaking the fabric. This step, traditionally called Hari Sarana focuses on a deep wash, removing any oils, dusts or residues, before the pattern is applied.

After that, the fabric is treated with something called harda solution, containing tannic acid. Harda is a natural ingredient, extracted from exotic Myrobalan plums, also known as the Indian gooseberry. Later on, that becomes a background for the printed pattern.

Once the fabric is dry, it is time to transfer the desired print onto it. But even before that, a skilled manufacturer needs to carve the pattern onto the wooden block. Then the block is dipped in a dye several times, and pressed on the cloth – depending on the layers of colour, and the pressure used with the block, you can achieve various results working with the same dye and fabric. As all is done by hand, it requires much skill and dedication from the printer.

The printed textile is taken away to cure (dry) and washed from the remaining dye, so that it is finally ready to be whisked up to the sewing rooms and transformed into a charming cushion cover, or other soft furnishing accessories.

Block-printed scatter cushions make a perfect accessory that will give your space a unique feel. With their subtle pattern, geometric, floral and others, as well as pastel colours, they are sure to complement the décor of any space, whether traditional or modern in style. Timeless in design, they bring in an artistic vibe and a welcoming feel.

Macramé weave

Macramé cushion is another great comeback, straight from the hippie abodes of the seventies into our contemporary homes. Is it the fact that each piece is a one-off, the beauty of the weave or the laid-back feeling it creates that makes macramé the biggest trend right now? Probably the combination of it all and the fact that they are available in so many colours and patterns that everyone will find a macramé cushion that will do wonders for their space.

Not only for boho style enthusiasts, macramé cushions suit well an array of styles. Those in basic colour pallets, like beige or grey, are the perfect complementary accent for minimalist, Scandinavian and farmhouse interiors. Bold colour macramé, on the other hand, will bring fun and carefree atmosphere to a mid-century or eclectic living area.
