Console Tables

A console table can reshape the entire feel of a room. Whether it’s for displaying décor, storing everyday essentials, or filling an empty spot, this piece can make a real difference in how your home flows. Here’s what to keep in mind when choosing the right one.

What is the right size and placement for a console table?

The size and placement of a console table should depend on the layout and the type of space it will be placed in.

Living room

In the living room, a console table can serve various purposes:

  • Placed behind the sofa: it can create a defined seating area and provide a surface for lamps or decor. Keep the height similar to or slightly lower than the sofa back, and about two-thirds its length.
  • As a TV stand: for a wall-mounted TV, ensuring it’s a few centimetres wider than the TV on each side for balance. A piece with shelves or drawers would be a perfect solution for media equipment.
  • Placed against a wall: can turn an empty wall into a stylish focal point by adding art or a gallery wall above.

Hallway or an entryway

In a narrow hallway, a slim console table can add function and visual interest, displaying artwork or small decor without cluttering the walkway. Use a shallow console that's 30-35 centimetres deep, to ensure at least 80–90 centimetres of clear walking space.

The entryway is a classic location for a console table, as it creates an inviting first impression and offers functionality right by the door. Perfect for keys and mail, with a height of 75-85 centimetres for comfort, and a length proportional to the wall.

Bedroom or a home office

The console table's compact size and versatility allow it to also adapt to more private spaces. Paired with a mirror and a stool, it can serve as a space-saving vanity in a bedroom. Ensure the depth from 35-45 centimetres, providing enough elbow room, and the height that allows for comfortable seating.

A console table can also work as a narrow desk in a compact home office. It should have at least 45 centimetres of depth for a laptop and other essentials.

What material is best for a console table?

Console tables come in a variety of materials, from sleek metal to timeless wood. Choosing the right design is essential to complement the room’s style and ensure both longevity and visual appeal.

Solid and engineered wood

Durable and high-quality, solid wood console tables are a timeless choice that will complement every interior and decor style. Wood-like consoles are an excellent budget-friendly option that still offers the same elegant, stylish look as their solid wood equivalents. With materials like MDF, you can choose from a wide selection of veneer or paint colours to suit your taste.

Glass

Glass console tables bring an airy, open feel to any room, making it appear larger, perfect for smaller spaces or entryways. Often combined with marble or wood tops, these tables serve as a sophisticated statement piece, elevating the room’s atmosphere. When choosing a console, it's important to consider the legs as well. Durable materials like iron or steel, as well as solid woods such as pine, are commonly used for their strength and stability.
